Leaving Tully Nurseries
It is important to cover the roots before you leave the nursery.
Roots drying out.
It is vital that all roots are protected from the elements at all times prior to planting.
Damage to Bark on Main Stem.
Physical damage to the bark by Rabbits, Hares, Strimmers or Lawnmowers can cause trees to die.
Water logged Soil
Prolonged spells of water logging will kill most trees. Stale stagnant conditions with no air around the roots spell disaster especially for newly planted unestablished trees.
Drying out after planting
Newly planted trees that have not established a root system in the ground are very vulnerable to dying from drying out during spells of dry weather in the first season or two.
Vandalism
Unfortunately nothing needs to be said here!
Incorrect planting depth
Planting the tree either too deep with too much soil over the root system or too shallow with the root system partially exposed can retard the trees establishment especially where any of the above points come into play.
Damage to the roots at planting
Forcing a large root system into too small a planting hole or pruning off roots to make it fit are not good practice. Ensure that a large enough planting pit is prepared.
Planting in wet soil
Firming wet soil (particularly clay soils) around the root of a tree at planting will ruin the structure of the soil, lead to water logging, poor aeration and consequently poor root development.
Herbicides
It is important to be aware that many trees will absorb systemic herbicides if sprayed onto the bark.
